Questions

Asked about this dataset

Is the TRS net pension liability in a district's financial statements the whole liability?

No. It is the district's proportionate share. The state's share is reported separately: Austin ISD shows $308,611,482 for the district and $386,356,618 for the state's share associated with the district. Both were measured as of August 31, 2024.

What fiscal year do Texas school districts use?

Either June 30 or August 31. In this sample Northside ISD and Katy ISD end August 31, 2025; the other eight end June 30, 2025.

Why can a recapture district's fund balance ratio look low?

Recapture payments are general fund expenditures. Austin ISD's $1,746,900,764 of general fund expenditures includes $771,603,135 of contracted instructional services (recapture).
